Being healthy is hard. Trying to lose that extra weight can be one of the most stressful things you encounter in your daily life. Counting calories, working out — it’s rough sometimes. It’s common practice for a lot of people to have at least one cup of coffee in the mornings. This guilty (or not-so-guilty) pleasure can be turned into an advantage. If you can teach yourself to forgo the cream and sugar, you’re looking at a zero-calorie beverage that can give your metabolism a little boost. Couple that with the antioxidants you’d be getting from your morning routine, and your day is already off to a good start.

Chewing Gum

If you feel the need to chew on something out of boredom, anxiety, or for any other reason, you should consider trying to keep a pack of gum handy whenever possible. A lot of gum brands are sugar free and only have about two calories per piece. Think about the two calories you could be chewing on for several minutes and compare that to the number of chips you might have eaten in that same amount of time. Also, if you consider a minty flavor of gum you’ll be less likely to want other foods. Think about how orange juice sounds after brushing your teeth.

Options and Snacks

When most people hear the word “diet,” the image that pops into their head is that of a tiny plate full of foods that a woodland creature might eat. In reality, all you have to do is make better choices throughout the day. Instead of getting ice cream, consider frozen yogurt. Maybe get a hot air popcorn machine for your house. As long as you can avoid massive amounts of butter, you can still have large portions of popcorn without guilt. There is always a better option, even if it’s a simple as splitting a piece of birthday cake with a friend instead of eating the whole thing alone.

Make Sure You’re Eating Enough

Don’t get sucked into believing that to lose weight you have to starve yourself. You’re body naturally tries to keep you alive. Because of this, you need to be sure your body doesn’t think you are staving yourself to death. If you don’t eat enough, your body might kick into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism and holding on to what it still has. In this case, that’s fat. Try to make sure you’re not trying so hard to eat less that you aren’t eating enough at all.

Trust Yourself

You might stress about work, about your kids, or about your parents. The list is long. The worst part about trying to lose weight is having to try so hard. Stress makes it even harder. The best thing to do is to try to trust yourself more. If you know you’re choosing the light ranch on your salad or the grilled chicken instead of the fried, then why do you need to constantly calculate that in your head? B e proud of yourself for taking the stairs instead of the elevator and move on. Think of it as an accomplishment instead of a chore, and before you even realize how hard you’ve worked you will be seeing results.

Just take it one moment at a time. It’s a lifestyle choice. But a lifetime is made up of individual moments. If you can try to make the right choice in at least most of those moments, the rest will fall into place.
